CLASSROOM LAYOUT
The layout of the classroom is essential to creating an effective learning environment. This classroom has been designed for optimal comfort and productivity. Students' desks and supplies are appropriately spaced to give students room to walk about and transition between activities. High-need resources will be stored conveniently and within eye sight of students. The teacher's desk is situated in the front left corner so that she can keep an eye on the entire classroom when seated at her desk. The class library will be stocked with books such as D is For Democracy by Elissa Grodin, Shh We're Writing the Constitution by Jean Fritz, and A More Perfect Union: The Story of Our Constitution by Betsy Maestro. During the duration of this unit the bulletin boards next to the reading center will feature the Classroom Bill of Rights, a copy of the U.S. Constitution Preamble, and other visual elements that will enhance students' understanding of democracy and citizenship.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
This unit takes place during the third quarter of the school year. By this point students should be familiar with the classroom rules, routines, and procedures. However, during the first week of the unit students will participate in creating a 'Classroom Bill of Rights,' which will outline specific behaviors and expectations that the unit will entail. Teachers will help students develop and write a list of ten rules by which everyone will agree to abide. Each student will sign the 'Classroom Bill of Rights' and it will be posted in the classroom throughout the duration of the unit.
Teachers will also need to review with students the protocol for working with technology. This will include safe Internet usage and working responsibly with the SMART Board and other such devices. Teachers will need to monitor students as they work with technology to ensure compliance.
